We are like many families. Tony and Carol met at university and married in 1977. We both had successful careers. Tony, an engineer, eventually became an entrepenneur. Carol slowly moved up the ladder as a registered dietitian. We added our two girls, Kim in 1985 and Lauren in 1989. Right from the get go we have been animal lovers, always housing a menagerie of pets. Life in the early days was predictable and in retrospect fairly simple.
When tragedy struck first with Carol's cancer in 1997 and then with Lauren's death in 1999, we were forced to re-script our lives and our selves. Much to our amazement tragedy, while difficult to negotiate, enriched our lives adding a depth of meaning we had previously overlooked. I'm sure, given the chance we would never repeat our losses. Having said that, I cannot imagine the "today" of our lives without the rich personal growth that Lauren's death ushered in.
Jia Lin joined us in 2002, adopted from China. We love her dearly. In fact, we treasure her in ways we could only have imagined prior to losing her sister, Lauren.
